The winter months can take a toll not only on our bodies but on our homes too. With cold days, foggy mornings and dark evenings abound, it can leave your home feeling damp and stuffy. Your home doesn’t have to feel this way throughout winter, however, and there are a few easy things you can do to freshen up your space. Here’s our list of things you can do to freshen up your space in the winter months.
Open windows and doors
It’s probably the last thing you want to do when it’s cold outside but opening some windows and doors will provide so much needed airflow to your property. If you live somewhere that’s very cold, opening some windows for just a few minutes while you’re taking a hot shower will help. The fresh air will help to reduce moisture and dampness in your home while adding some oxygen to rooms that may be stuffy from heating.
Use essential oils
Essential oils are an excellent way to freshen up a space. Try a candle-based oil burner or electronic oil diffuser to fill your space with refreshing smells. Fragrances such as mint, lemon, orange and ylang-ylang are perfect options to add fresh scents to your home.
Add indoor plants to your home
If you use heating a lot throughout the winter, the air in your home can feel stale and dry. To add more oxygen to your rooms and brighten dark corners, add some low-maintenance indoor plants to your living spaces. You can do this, while protecting your floors from damage, by adding small pot plants to side tables or using a plant stand to elevate your plant slightly from the floor.
Make your home smell like a homewares store
One of the nicest parts of browsing in a luxurious homewares store is the beautiful fragrance that fills the entire space. You can do this yourself at home by making a stovetop potpourri recipe. To do this, fill a medium pot 3/4 full of water and add 2 lemons sliced, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract and 2 sprigs of rosemary. Bring the mixture to a boil and then simmer for as long as you like. Just make sure you keep an eye the water levels (recipe and steps via Instrupix).
While it can feel like winter will never end when the mornings are dark and evenings are cold, it doesn’t mean your living space has to feel cold as well. Trying the strategies above will help to freshen up your space and create more airflow, so your home feels as inviting in winter as it does in summer.
